LANAP®: Advanced Gum Disease Treatment

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, also known as LANAP®, is an FDA-cleared and innovative way for your dentist in Tarpon Spring, FL, to treat gum disease. In the past, advanced gum disease that resulted in deep pockets of bacteria around the teeth and severe gum recession required extensive and invasive treatment through gum surgery. LANAP® is a less-invasive option that is helping to encourage natural healing of the gum tissue.

The Procedure

The doctors and staff at Knellinger Dental Excellence are familiar with the special tools used in LANAP® treatment. You can expect for a small instrument to be used that emits a laser to target diseased tissue. Usually, your dentist will use the laser initially in the pocket to help clear out the infected areas. Next, the tooth is cleaned of any plaque buildup. Finally, the laser is used again to clean out the pocket and remove any debris, as well as to help make a seal around the tooth.

Because LANAP® is less-invasive, it also takes less time to recover from. This means you can get back to your normal life much faster. There is also less pain involved than with traditional surgery. The laser only targets diseased tissue, so there is no need to cut through healthy tissue to fix the gums.
